Lune,

Per my comments above, we have the best capital markets in the world, why would be possibly want to change them? Or at least that's what the powers that be would have us believe.

The gaiatsu comment is that this is a huge missed opportunity, and "foreign pressure" could be added to the many reasons for reform.

This is a third-rail issue for the Republicans, and probably Hillary too, who is very dependent on Wall Street for funding. The other Democratic candidates seem to be fading (with all due respect to Obama backers). Bloomberg could take this on, but I can't imagine he will run.

Its leaders are masters of invoking gaiatsu, or foreign pressure, when they want to force unruly domestic constituencies into line.

You're assuming American politicians and regulators view Wall Street as the problem child to be punished for this mess. Given that our esteemed Treasury Sec. is straight from the biggest i-bank of them all, they probably view pesky homeowners not paying up on their toxic underwater mortgages as the problem, while poor Wall St. is merely a victim of all those greedy borrowers. After all, those securities really would be AAA if everyone paid on time, right?

Ah, the world is flat in ways that Tom Friedman does not see!

We protest over Chinese lead paint on our kids' toys, now they seem to be having problems with our toxic financial instruments.
