Anon of 8:57 AM,

I correspond with Thoma and he has noted that he stays away from commentary on markets because it isn't one of his areas of academic focus. Similarly, on Econbrowser, the currency wonk in Menzie Chin, not Hamilton.

Steser has been concerned about central banks moving away from the dollar. The post provides a link to Martin Wolf, who is well regarded, hardly an alarmist, yet wrote a very worried article about what the end of global imbalances would mean for the world economy.

And as the post notes, Vietnam isn't significant in and of itself but for its potential to influence the actions of other Asian central banks. People tend to focus on China, but Taiwan is a also a large (although obviously not as large) buyer of US $.

Sure, a central bank that replaces its dollar reserves with some other currency is a cause for concern. But The Telegraph and its business section authors have little credibility for authoritative comment. I have seen enough "the sky is falling" splash in their writings that keeps me from putting my nuts in a sling on the first pass. I would be much more interested in hearing what people like Setser, Hamilton, Thoma, Beckworth, and other economist bloggers think of the impact of this announcement.

Yes, Vietnam is only little, and there USD reserves are only little. A more relevant measure of impact would be the rate at which Vietnam aqcuired these reserves, which would give a better picture of impact going forward.
