Iran is a red herring.

There is one thing that both the US and Iran have in common, they both blame each other for their problems. They both then make a lot of money when the fix them.

They have both chosen loud mouthed right wing nuts to run them, and both of the nuts actually believe that they control something. They were hired to spit fire, not make any actual decisions. The military/corporate state has already made them.

This story seems to be more of the same, blame iran, look what they are doing. Is there something new here? Barter, the oldest form of trade.

This is why the repeal of the Glass-Ste(a)gall act SHOULD be repealed. It would allow the socalled "Merchant Banks" to re-appear/re-emerge. Banks who are dedicated to financing international trade only. This would take away restraints at the large banks to finance international trade. And then barter trading will lose its reason for existence.

The US and indeed the international community is getting pretty strict and effective with impeding the ability of some of Iran's major commercial banks to clear through the international payments systems.

I think this arrangement is substantially a function of that.

Matt

"From the Financial Times:
Thailand on Monday said it planned to barter rice for oil with Iran in the clearest example to date of how the triple financial, fuel and food crisis is reshaping global trade as countries struggle with high commodity prices and a lack of credit.

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation said such government-to-government bartering – a system of trade not used for decades – was likely to become more common as the private sector was finding it hard to access credit for food imports.

“Government-to-government deals will increase in number,” said Concepción Calpe, a senior economist at the FAO in Rome. “The lack of credit for trade could lead also to a resurgence of barter deals between countries,” she added."

What do we call this economy? The nation barter economy? Can it work with anything but one good for another good? How do you price it?

Don the libertarian Democrat?

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation said such government-to-government bartering – a system of trade not used for decades – was likely to become more common as the private sector was finding it hard to access credit for food imports.
