Announcing Second SOS “Double Your Donations” Challenge!

Another loyal donor responded to the alarm we sounded on September 17, in We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Programming for This Important Announcement”. There, we explained the fundraiser was so far behind where it needed to be that I might be forced to take no pay for the next 12 month. That would be unsustainable and would set the site up for either major restructuring or even shutdown in late 2024.

The very good news is that thanks to you, we are now out of the fundraiser being out of the “gas gauge approaching empty” stage. It was very gratifying and humbling to see how many took our alarm seriously and offered advice, as well as donations. Many gave a second time, including some with modest means. So we are now at over 1500 donations and have raised our donor target to 1650!

As you can see, thanks to so many of you taking quick action, we moved quickly through our (comparatively small) sixth goal and are into our seventh, of more original reporting.

But we still have not met that target. That means we aren’t yet where we’d ought to be, particularly since the struggle to avoid a funding disaster tells us that we need to spend more time on the competing priority of attracting new readers. And even though donation number have increased sharply, in recent years, we’ve finished the fundraiser in the high 1600 to high 1800 range. So if you haven’t given yet, please use this challenge to chip in!

So please use this generous offer to help in our final push to enable us to do all the things we want to achieve in delivering you wide-ranging news surveys, pointed analysis, incisive commentary, and cuddly critter pix.

This new challenge is to match the next 30 donations of $100 (and multiples of $100 like $200 up to their match amount) and the next 20 of $50. Make this magnimous offer a rousing success by going to our donation page now!

Readers have been writing urgently to say how much Naked Capitalism means to them. From Michael C:

There is no other source of information, analysis and reality like NC anywhere in the interwebs universe. A daily visit is a must, no matter what else is going on in my world. Bereft doesn’t describe it if Naked Capitalism were to disappear. And, especially, I have no doubt that NC’s sane Covid coverage over the last three years plus has literally saved my life.

From Devra D:

Thank you for sounding the alarm yesterday.
We support you and the team – read you everyday.
Amazing reporting, analysis and commentary.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!

From fringe element:

Myself, I am creaking by on Social Security as my sole source of income, but I am the daughter of a frugal bookkeeper so I am a world class champ at budgeting. I will be doing the vintage thing and sending a check for at least $100 and more if I can swing it.

Like so many others, I find this site an island of sanity in the ocean of fake news and propaganda that threatens to drown us. As priorities go, supporting sites like this one is right up there with food and housing as an essential cost.

You can make your contribution here, via check, debit or credit card, PayPal, or our new payment processor, Clover. If you give by check (we very much like checks!), be sure to let us know by e-mailing us at yves@nakedcapitalism.com with “SOS Challenge” in the subject line.

Thanks to our benefactors for his generosity, and I hope readers will respond in kind.

And if $100 or $50 is a stretch for you, don’t let that stop you from making a donation if you’ve been planning to but haven’t had time yet. Every contribution helps us meet our goals. And the other important way to help is by telling others about our work, whether in person to friends, family, and colleagues, in social media like Facebook and Twitter, or in comments (with links to the site!) in other comments sections such as on Reddit. So I hope you’ll take our supported up on his fundraiser challenge in whatever way you can!

I am selling off things in my house I will not need if/when I move out of the U.S., so I have some extra money to send ($50).

One thing I will always need is my continued dose of NC in the morning!

Just made second $50 donation (also a monthly supporter). NC is a public utility, necessary for mental and civic health. This country is failing on every front, but as long as NC exists, I have some hope. Thank you for the invaluable community here. Long live NC!

Wait, what? We can include advice with our donations?! I’m learning so many new things about the site during this fundraising week. For instance I didn’t even know that there has been a newsletter for a couple of years now!!

My first suggestion would be to be more careful about typos in the original reporting. I have made comments in the past pointing to typos, but they seem to have been ignored. So I stopped making those comments, but I’m not willing to share posts that have sloppy writing in them. This would seem to be a simple matter of taking advantage of the comment section to provide editing services, by monitoring for comments with the word “editor”, or something. We readers could actually help the site, if there was a reliable way to do it. (I used to be an editor in my professional life, but of technical writing.)
Secondly, sometimes there are snarky comments from the poster of the links articles, which is fine, but they don’t include a snark tag. This presents two problems in my view. Firstly if I were to share the site, people wouldn’t know how to interpret the unidentified snark. Secondly, it’s very impressive that this website is chronicled in the US library or something so that it can be used by Future researchers to understand about the history of events in the informed context of the times. But the lack of a snark tag really complicates that and it makes me wonder what future historians will make of it.

I mention these two small suggestions now because you specifically say that you’re looking to attract new people and you’re encouraging us to share the site and I wanted to let you know what would make me be more willing to do that.

Good luck! And thanks for all the work you do!!

Now that I’ve made my donation (Thank You, Naked Capitalism!), I agree wholeheartedly. NC is so good at critiquing crapification in all its excrescences, yet knocks out copy that sometimes requires a caring copy-pencil. We shouldn’t pick and choose our standards–that lowers them. As Expat suggests, hurried/harried prose may alienate the uninitiated. I certainly understand time and sanity constraints, and our general culture of slovenliness no doubt lowers expectations, but an easy mode of noting needed copy edits would be useful, and for some of us, fulfilling. Thanks for considering his suggestion, and thanks for keeping us less crazy.

Finally, I was able to submit a donation today! It seems that Clover now allows a Canadian Postal Code to stand in for a Zip. Don’t know if I have to do anything (other than make a qualifying donation) to activate one of the generous matching offers that are being put forward, but if the donation is matched, that would be great!

Although I have been blocked from commenting by Lambert because he did not like my opinion on masking, I still have a warm heart and enormous appreciation for the work of NC. I am not a person of means but have made a small contribution nevertheless as a token of my appreciation.
    Kind regards, Jos Oskam

That is very nice of you! But you are actually not on any of our moderation lists.

A lot of readers in good standing (Wukchumni, Aurelien) wind up moderated all the time and we have no idea why. We also have a lot more mod words.

Your experience leads me to think that readers who get chewed out by me or Lambert and then their later comments wind up later mainly moderated think we put them in moderation, as opposed to they would have hit our tripwires regardless.

Again sorry for the frustration and appreciate your support.

      1. KD

I ended up on the wrong side of Yves on one occasion, and supposedly I’m in moderation, but all ego aside, this is a great website, great content, and so much of the sol-called “alternative web” stuff is just conspiracy theories, crap about the Rothschilds, and old fashioned white supremacy. (Did I hit any tripwires?). You don’t get that garbage here, and its because of the efforts at NC for moderation. I’ve made two donations this campaign and will keep giving because the quality of the coverage transcends anything you can find in the MSM.

      2. Revenant

        Well, that’s a relief! :-)

$100 on its way irrespective. I hope it finds its match for a matchless site.

Thank you for this excellently transparent, lucid window of sanity in my – sadly – heavily propagandized, NATO-US homogenized country, presently under a blue socialdemocratic PM, should be red, recently rewarded with the worst results in 99 years in the local elections. So there’s hope that things may change here and in Europe, as more people vote against the crop of us-nato vassals-politicans. US dollars have become more expensive to buy with Nkr, living costs much higher, here too, as the US proxy war against Russia in Ukraine creates waves of misery and ever more refugees – long lines outside food banks and the Salvation Army not seen here since before the Second World War. Scrimping on papers that too often irritate, to send a contribution to my informative, challenging, favorite daily. Thank you all!
