Antidote du Jour

Apologies for the lack of links. I came back from a trip, needed to do some housekeeping on laptop, and the hard disk crapped out. I’ve pressed an antique model into service, but getting back to normal operations is going to be a hassle and involve some expense. Grrr.

    Oops.

Cloning your hard drive once a month and doing data backups in between is good practice.

I use Acronis True Image and recommend it.

Always buy computer that is capable of booting up from its *card reader*. Thus you can have a *Micro Secure Digital* or a CF, *Compact Flash* Card in your wallet. Boot up from one of these cards when hard drive sputters to a stop. Keep copies of your favorite project on the boot-up-card or other card that you can simultaneously insert. If you have a computer illiteracy problem with this, ask 12 year old for help. You do not need to be selective; all children are hackers. You may need to select boot preference from BIOS, Basic Input Output System by touching F2 on boot-up. REad manual.

The beauty of the micro is its size. YOu can get 64 GB inside a thing smaller than your thumbnail. Clip it to your hair-ribbon before you slip past the security guard at NRO, National Reconnaissance Office. If you buy two identical computers, the chip can be trained to boot either of your twins without reprogramming.

    Good luck
    !
