Catch Us Discussing the New McCarthyism with Josh Scheer of KPFA/TruthDig Today, Dec.1 at Noon PST

This is Naked Capitalism’s special fundraiser, to fight a McCarthtyite attack against this site and 200 others by funding legal expenses and other site support. For more background on how the Washington Post smeared Naked Capitalism along with other established, well-regarded independent news sites, and why this is such a dangerous development, see this article by Ben Norton and Greenwald and this piece by Matt Taibbi. Our post gives more detail on how we plan to fight back. 341 donors have already supported this campaign. Please join us and participate via our Tip Jar, which shows how to give via check, credit card, debit card, or PayPal.

Hope you can listen to our discussion with Josh Scheer later today, at noon Pacific time, on his KPFA show, on how charges of “fake news” legitimated by the Washington Post against legitimate alternative news and analysis sites represent a McCarthyite threat to free speech. Some of you may already be fans of Josh through his regular podcasts at TruthDig.

You can tune in live at 90.7 FM in Los Angeles and most of Southern California, 98.7 FM in Santa Barbara, 99.5 FM in Ridgecrest/China Lake and on 93.7 FM in Rancho Bernardo/North San Diego.

You can also find a live stream here, and the same page has the audio archives.

Please listen either live or later! And tell your friends. Thanks!

Update: I went by the description on the KPFA site, but Kim Kaufman provided this correction:

It’s KPFK in Los Angeles, not Pacifica’s sister station KPFA, in Berkeley. It’s airs at 4 pm Los Angeles time (Thursday).

I just checked and don’t see Truthdig on KPFA’s schedule for today. What I see listed at noon is Doug Henwood’s “Behind the News” (a good program but not the one we’re looking for). Maybe it’s re-broadcast on KPFA but I can’t find it listed. So to answer Jeff N, as far as I can tell, it’s only on KPFK at 4p PT at the call letters and link above or at

Here’s a useful definition from Wikipedia.

“McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.[1] It also means “the practice of making unfair allegations or using unfair investigative techniques, especially in order to restrict dissent or political criticism.”[2] The term has its origins in the period in the United States known as the Second Red Scare, lasting roughly from 1950 to 1956 and characterized by heightened political repression against supposed communists, as well as a campaign spreading fear of their influence on American institutions and of espionage by Soviet agents. Originally coined to criticize the anti-communist pursuits of Republican U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, “McCarthyism” soon took on a broader meaning, describing the excesses of similar efforts. The term is also now used more generally to describe reckless, unsubstantiated accusations, as well as demagogic attacks on the character or patriotism of political adversaries.”

    Hi Josh,

Love your station but you might want to see this as a mean of enhancing donations to KPFA:

“How the Democrats could win again, if they wanted…”

Well, first thing they should do is apologize to white working class males for years of constant guilt tripping and demonization over “privilege” and the associated agitprop. Why do you think Trump got so much of the White Working Class vote? It’s not ‘racism’, it’s often reaction to perceived personal attacks.

It’s not just Democrats, and votes, but most ‘progressives’ and their causes.

For example, our local Pacifica Radio Station in Berkeley, KPFA, used to get five hundred of dollars a year in donations from us through their various fund drives.
After years of listening to their programs and their fundraisers and how they “represent and give voice to women, minorities, the poor, the GLBT ‘community’, immigrants, people of color, sexual minorities, the oppressed and others”,
after listening to an ever shrinking number of decent programs, the constant rape culture crap, white male guilt tripping, elaborations of white privileged, and their exclusive hiring of broadcasters only from the
“women, minorities, the GLBT ‘community’, immigrants, people of color, sexual minorities, the oppressed and others” Demographic,
we decided to forgo our donations to them and allow“women, minorities, the GLBT ‘community’, immigrants, people of color, sexual minorities, the oppressed and others” to strongly support the radio station financially since they seem to represent those groups, but not me.
I wouldn’t want to taint KPFA with my “white privileged” cash, so from now on, they get one dollar a year from my friends and me who all used to donate heavily. Why don’t you take this up with the KPFA board of directors? Perhaps they could do something?

    1. Kim Kaufman

Here’s an article I wrote a year ago about it. My email is on that article if you want to contact me. Also stay updated at It’s a long-term attempt at privatization to get a hold of the radio licenses by a few long-time infiltrators. It’s not pretty. And race baiting as a strategy within Pacifica is common. Pacifica is supposed to report on the ills of society – not mirror them.

    From Black Agenda Report:

Freedom Rider: Black Agenda Report on the Honor Roll
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

“Obama is doing whatever he can to drum up support for the endless wars and regime change policies he ultimately failed to solidify.”

“We’re proud to be on their hit list. Their ludicrous neo-McCarthyism shows the Democrats are not really a party at all, but a “gigantic marketing scheme meant to keep fearful progressives in line.” And the Washington Post is revealed as a lying rag.”
